Cyberslacking in Poland

2008-01-24

According to Gemius SA research, only every third adult Internet user in Poland thinks that using the Internet at work for private purposes is dishonest towards their employer. There are even fewer supporters of this opinion, only one-fourth, among those who encounter this problem every day - they are professionally active and have Internet access at work.

The research agency Gemius has published the results of research concerning cyberslacking in Poland. The aim of the research was to determine the attitude of Internet users towards cyberslacking, i.e. using the Internet during working hours for personal reasons. The results of the research confirm that it is not only common but also accepted by adult Internet users.

The majority of the Internet users (74%) see nothing wrong in using the Internet at work for private purposes as long as it does not interfere with their responsibilities. Over half of the respondents claim that it is necessary as a moment of rest (57%). According to every second Internet user (50%) using the Internet for private purposes is normal and everyone who has this possibility does it.

The researched Internet users consider cyberslacking as dishonest (31%) and improper (24%) relatively more rarely. To the least degree Polish Internet users are convinced that using the Internet for private purposes in working hours always negatively influences the quality of their work (20%).

The attitude of the respondents towards cyberslacking is diversified by age. The older the Internet users are, the more rarely they agree with the statements which justify cyberslacking and more often express their disapproval.

As the research reveals, as much as 93% of the Internet users who use the Internet at work confess to cyberslacking. For the most part, Internet users use their private e-mail accounts (79%) and browse through WWW pages (36%). Almost an equal number of respondents buy in shops or at Internet auctions (33%).

The results of the research also reveal how many hours employees spent cyberslacking. Every second Internet user using the Internet at work admits that he/she spends half an hour, on average, for private reasons. Every sixth respondent spends two or more hours. These results might be lowered – due to the fear of admitting to improper use of a company’s Internet connection. This statement is confirmed by the results of an analogical question concerning the time devoted to cyberslacking by work colleagues – every third respondent claims that this is at least two hours a day.

About the research – The research was conducted by means of Internet surveys displayed on web sites which use the free of charge site-centric audit stat.pl/PBI. The surveys were displayed randomly between 15 and 21 November 2007. The answers of 3823 Internet users aged 18 and over who filled in the whole questionnaire were analysed. To make the data representative of the total Internet user population, the answers were analysed using an analytical weight created on the basis of data on gender, age of the Internet users, as well as the frequency of using the Internet from Omnibus PBS research (VIII-IX 2007).
